cabeza-frenologica
Phrenology Head

Phrenology was a fashionable science in the 19th century that studied the relationship between mind and matter through different regions of the brain. Although this school of scientific thought was later reduced to pseudoscience, we have inherited from it some important aesthetic references in interior design and design. La Cartuja de Sevilla captured the thinking of that era with this phrenology head, patented in 1845.

The originator of this school of thought was the German physician Franz Joseph Gall. For Gall, every mental faculty, and even traits of character and personality, resided in specific areas of the brain that could be assessed through the shape or size of the skull. Its leading exponent in Spain was Mariano Cubí y Soler (1801-1875), who left us several aesthetic references. Cubí travelled through Mexico, the United States and Cuba, where he founded the Revista Bimestre Cubana (1831) and co-founded several schools. He decided to devote himself to phrenology after coming across a book by the philosopher Combe in 1828. A staunch defender of this scientific movement, in 1844 Cubí presented to the scientific community his study on the design of a head mapping forty-three faculties divided into three parts of the brain. Cubí's phrenological doctrine was embodied in a ceramic head made at La Cartuja de Sevilla's earthenware factory and patented in 1845. Standing 36.5 cm tall, the bust is an original piece of exquisite workmanship that has become a prized ornament, drawing attention in doctors' consulting rooms, art studios and barbershops. It is still made today as an aesthetic icon of an era of medicine and a testament to the thinkers who strove to understand the mysteries of human behaviour.
